We all know that hip hop has been around for a couple of decades and it’s definitely not a newcomer in the scene. The style has actually been around since the 1980s, when celebrities like Will Smith and Christopher “Kid” Reid showed the young generation then how it should be done. The style has then evolved over the past decades, and tastes and styles have changed to correspond with the culture of the time. Why don’t we go through the history of hip hop briefly before we head forward to the present time?
Back in the 1980s, major brand names became synonymous with hip hop. Fashion labels such as Nike, Adidas and Clark stores were sporting leather bomber jackets and brightly colored pantsuits. Sports jerseys were a hot commodity with Will Smith showing them off in his hit television show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” This was the time when jewelries were designed to be heavy, and large sunglasses came into the scene, creating an image of wealth and luxury in the hip hop culture of those times. In the latter part of this decade, MC hammer and the other rappers were introduced to be the hip hop fashion trend setters by wearing baggy pants and baseball caps.
When it hit the 90s, the “gangsta” look was introduced and the previous hip hop fashion shifted to the style which is the fashion statement of the Los Angeles Chicano gangsters. The style, as some of you might know, sports baggy pants that were worn low and without a belt, shirt tails hanging outside the pants and bandanas on the head. Brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Polo and Nautica all joined the bandwagon with this style. It was also a time where hip hop became THE urban street-wear, when brands like Mecca USA, Lugz and Rocawear all came into play.
After that, the style just seem to shift and shift until the time of the bling-blings when the 2000s came in and the blings, or otherwise known as exaggerated jewelry, were made popular by Jazz-Z and the Hot Boys. Gucci even had a hand in providing hip jewelry at this time in the scene as today.
Today, you can find hip hop wear everywhere, and you can even purchase them in fashion stores online. You can also follow the looks of Will Smith, Eminem and the other hip hop celebrities without so much as even leaving the comforts of your home or driving to the nearest mall!
